The Ascendant is the sign of the zodiac that was peering over the eastern horizon of the place where you were born, in the exact minute of your birth. The Earth turns on its axis once a day, so that point travels through the twelve signs in 24 hours: it changes sign roughly every two hours. That is why, to know it with certainty, you need your birth time.
Why it matters so much
The Ascendant is the first impression you make: your appearance, your rhythm, your instinctive way of reacting to the new. It is the filter between your inner world and the outside.
