Few astrological phrases have slipped into everyday life as much as 'Mercury is retrograde'. It gets blamed for messages that do not arrive, delayed flights and exes who reappear. Let us separate what it is from what is attributed to it.
What it is, astronomically
Mercury does not really move backward. It is an illusion of perspective: because Mercury is faster than Earth, every so often we 'pass' it in orbit and, from our point of view, it seems to slide back a stretch against the background stars. It is the same effect as overtaking a car on the highway and seeing it, for an instant, go backward. It happens three or four times a year, about three weeks each time.
What is attributed to it, in astrology
Mercury rules the mind, the word, agreements, travel and technology. When it appears to go backward, tradition says those areas become more internal and erratic: a good time to review, rewrite, reconsider (everything that starts with 're-'), and a delicate time to close deals or buy devices without reading the fine print.
It is worth toning down the drama. It is not a curse: it is, at most, an invitation to go slower and pay attention to details. Much of its fame is confirmation effect: on days when everything goes wrong we blame Mercury; on the days that go well, we do not even look at it.
Mercury retrograde does not ruin your plans. If anything, it asks you to read them twice.
How to move through it
- ✦ Review before sending: contracts, important messages, reservations.
- ✦ Make backups and confirm travel times with a margin to spare.
- ✦ Make use of the 're-' energy: resume projects, reconnect, reorganize.
- ✦ Avoid, if you can, signing or buying expensive technology during the exact phase.
- ✦ Do not use it as an excuse for everything: most days are ordinary days.
