What the 12 astrological houses are and what each one means

The houses are the twelve stages of your life: the self, money, relationships, intimacy, work, destiny. A clear guide to what each one governs.

If the signs say how, the houses say where. They are the twelve stages of life where your planets express themselves: from your identity to your purpose, from love to money, from home to the hidden. A planet in the 5th house plays out in romance and creativity; the same planet in the 10th house, in your career.

The personal houses (1 to 4): who you are

  • House 1: the self, your body, your presentation (begins at the Ascendant).
  • House 2: money, resources, what you value and own.
  • House 3: the mind, communication, siblings, the close surroundings.
  • House 4: home, family, your roots, your intimate world.

The relationship houses (5 to 8): with others

  • House 5: romance, creativity, play, children.
  • House 6: everyday work, health, habits, service.
  • House 7: the partner, committed relationships, business partners.
  • House 8: deep intimacy, what is shared, crises and transformations.

The transpersonal houses (9 to 12): your place in the world

  • House 9: travel, higher studies, philosophy, meaning.
  • House 10: career, public vocation, your place in society.
  • House 11: friends, groups, projects, the future.
  • House 12: the unconscious, the spiritual, what withdraws and surrenders.
The planets are actors, the signs their wardrobe, the houses the stage where the play takes place.

The house where each planet falls tells you in which area of life you will feel its energy most strongly. That is why two people with Venus in the same sign can experience love differently: if in one it is in the 5th house and in another in the 10th, one plays it out in romance and the other through their public role.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my birth time for the houses?

Yes. The houses depend on the Ascendant, which changes every two hours. Without an exact time they cannot be placed with precision.

What happens if a house is empty?

It is completely normal: there are only ten planets for twelve houses. An empty house does not mean that area does not exist, only that it is not a main focus of tension in your chart.
